The Christiana Hernia Center was created to provide successful treatment for all types of hernias.  Utilizing a combined surgical approach, even complex hernias previously deemed non-repairable are successfully treated.  This combined surgical approach also offers the benefits of less pain and a quicker recovery time.

Do you have the signs of a hernia?

The most typical sign of a hernia is a bulge under your skin in the groin or abdomen. You may also feel pain when you lift, cough or sneeze. Hernias affect men, women and children of all ages. The good news is hernias are highly treatable.   Best of all, after successful treatment, you're able resume your regular activities. We use the newest materials and techniques in treating primary and recurrent hernias.  Our center is available to patients for consultation, surgical treatment or just to ask questions.

Why the combination of a general surgeon and plastic surgeon?

Many hernias are treated by just the general surgeon.  Our center offers general surgeons utilizing state of the art treatment approaches that can offer you the best results. Some hernia problems, namely large ventral hernias, may require a surgical repair that utilizes the skill of both the general and plastic surgeon.  Performing a tension free repair can use the technique of component muscle flap advancement that both the general and plastic surgeon working together can perform with good success.

Many ventral hernias are also associated with obesity.   The removal of the excess skin (panniculectomy) is important to decrease the pull on the abdominal wall and the incident of recurrent hernias.  In these instances, a combined approach with a plastic surgeon is performed to excise the pannus and reconstruct the abdominal wall skin flaps.  The surgeons work together to produce the best outcome for you.

Many abdominal wall hernias are also associated with pregnancy (diastasis).  Although these hernias can be treated using multiply different approaches, the plastic surgeon may help reconstruct the abdominal muscles and skin excess at the same time of the hernia repair.  Our team works together to provide you with the best results.

This website provides information about hernias and hernia repair, since every hernia is different we recommend making an appointment to talk with our surgeons to discuss the best plan of action for you.  Keep in mind, some hernias can cause serious health complications, so if you think you may have one, it is important to see your doctor for a complete medical evaluation.
